Cats and small dogs (under 10kg) present a different flooring challenge than larger dogs. The claw forces are lower, but cats in particular have sharp retractable claws that can scratch specific surfaces, and litter tracking introduces fine abrasive particles that accelerate surface wear over time.
Scratch resistance for cats
Cat claws are typically sharper than dog claws and are fully retractable — meaning cats can exert their claws at full sharpness when they choose to, particularly when jumping down from furniture or when startled. On a 0.3mm wear layer, a determined cat can create fine surface scratches. These are typically hairline marks rather than deep gouges, and in most household lighting they're not prominent.
For cat households, 0.3mm is the minimum acceptable wear layer. 0.5mm is recommended if your cat is particularly claw-active or if you are installing in a high-light area where fine scratches would be visible. The recommendation is identical for most small dog breeds.
Litter tracking and floor maintenance
Cat litter — particularly clay-based litter — is significantly abrasive. Tracked across a hard floor, fine litter particles act like fine-grit sandpaper on the wear layer. The damage is cumulative and invisible until the wear layer is noticeably thinned.
The practical solutions: place a textured mat directly outside the litter tray to remove litter from paws before the cat walks on the main floor, and sweep or vacuum the floor daily in homes with cats. Regular removal of tracked particles is more effective than upgrading wear layer thickness in addressing litter wear.
Waterproofing
Cats and small dogs have less frequent accident risk than larger dogs but it still occurs — particularly in illness, aging, or during the transition from outdoor to indoor living. The same logic applies: hybrid SPC's waterproof core handles accidents without permanent damage. Laminate does not.
Noise — an underrated consideration for cat households
Cats are often active at night. Claws on a hard floor, particularly in an apartment or open-plan home, can create noise that travels. An acoustic-rated underlay (separate or attached) significantly reduces the transmission of claw impact noise through the floor to rooms below. For apartment dwellers with cats, the acoustic spec matters for your strata compliance as well as your sleep.
What works
Hybrid SPC at 0.5mm wear layer is the straightforward recommendation for cat and small pet households. Matt finish to minimise visible scratch marks. Acoustic underlay for apartments. Use our Floor Finder for a specific recommendation for your home.
